What is area?

Area measures the size of a surface: how much ground a field covers, how much floor a room has, or how much paint a wall needs. It is a two-dimensional quantity, so area units are squares of length units: a square meter is a square one meter on each side.

Because area units are squared, their conversion factors are squared too. A meter is 100 centimeters, but a square meter is 10,000 square centimeters. A foot is 12 inches, but a square foot is 144 square inches. This is the most common source of mistakes in area conversions.

Land has always had its own units. The acre was originally the area a team of oxen could plough in a day, and the hectare (10,000 m²) is the metric land unit used by most of the world. Many countries still use traditional units for real estate: the tsubo in Japan, the pyeong in Korea, the mu in China, the rai in Thailand and the bigha across South Asia.

How to convert area units

To convert an area, square the length conversion factor. Since 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². Since 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 square inch = 2.54² = 6.4516 cm².

To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length by its width in the same unit. A room 4 m × 5 m has an area of 20 m²; a room 12 ft × 15 ft has an area of 180 ft².
