What is typography?
Typography has its own units of length. The point is the basic unit: in desktop publishing and on the web it is exactly 1/72 of an inch (about 0.353 mm), and twelve points make a pica. Font sizes are measured in points, so 12 pt text has a body about one sixth of an inch tall.
On screens, CSS uses pixels (px), defined as 1/96 inch, so 12 pt = 16 px. Relative units such as the em and rem scale with the font size; this converter assumes the default 16 px (12 pt) size.
Before desktop publishing, printers used slightly different points: the Anglo-American point of about 0.3515 mm and the European Didot point of about 0.376 mm.
