What is density?

Density is mass per unit volume: how much matter is packed into a given space. Lead is dense and cork is not, which is why a small lead weight is heavier than a large cork float. The SI unit is the kilogram per cubic meter; chemists often use grams per cubic centimeter or per milliliter, which give water a density of almost exactly 1.

Density decides whether things float: anything less dense than water (1,000 kg/m³) floats in it. Ice at about 917 kg/m³ floats with about 90% of its volume below the surface.

Frequently asked questions

What is the density of water?

About 1,000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³) at 4 °C, and 998 kg/m³ at 20 °C. In US units, about 62.4 lb/ft³ or 8.34 lb/US gallon.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1,000: 2.7 g/cm³ (aluminum) is 2,700 kg/m³.
