How quaternary works

Quaternary is the base-4 number system, using the digits 0 to 3. Each quaternary digit is exactly two bits. DNA, with its four bases A, C, G and T, is naturally a quaternary code.

Each position is worth 4 times the position to its right: 1, 4, 16, 64, 256 and so on. So 3333 means 3 × 43 + 3 × 42 + 3 × 41 + 3 × 40 = 255.

Where quaternary is used

  • Encoding DNA sequences.
  • Two-bit groupings in computing.
