How to convert binary to hexadecimal

Split the binary number into groups of 4 digits starting from the right, and replace each group with its hexadecimal digit. (Or: multiply each digit by 2 raised to the power of its position (counting from 0 on the right) and add the results, then divide the number by 16 again and again and write down the remainders; read in reverse order, the remainders are the hexadecimal digits.)

Example: 11111111 to hexadecimal

Because 16 = 24, every hexadecimal digit stands for exactly 4 binary digits. Split the binary number into groups of 4 from the right (adding leading zeros), then write each group as one hexadecimal digit:

Binary groupHexadecimal digit
1111F (15)
1111F (15)

Result: 11111111 in binary = FF in hexadecimal.
